Khadi

Khadi is a unique fabric that is woven on a handloom using hand-spun yarn, distinguishing it from other handloom fabrics. While all khadi is handloom, not all handloom fabrics are khadi. Khadi is made from yarn that is spun by hand, whereas handloom fabrics are typically made from mill-spun yarn. This fundamental difference in the spinning process is what sets khadi apart, and it plays a key role in its texture and properties.

Khadi is entirely powered by manual labor, making it an eco-friendly choice. It does not require electricity for production, unlike machine-made fabrics. The hand-spun yarn used in khadi has a looser twist compared to mill-spun yarn, which contributes to its porous, soft, and breathable nature. This results in a fabric that feels light and airy, with excellent absorption properties. The loose twist of the yarn also helps khadi maintain its natural, rustic charm, making it a comfortable choice, particularly for hot and humid climates.

Despite its rich history, khadi makes up only 0.4% of India's total fabric production, while handloom accounts for 20% and power loom fabrics dominate with 74%. Yet, khadi holds a significant cultural value, symbolizing self-reliance and sustainable living. Its appeal lies not only in its unique texture but also in the story behind its production—each piece represents the efforts of artisans dedicated to preserving traditional craftsmanship.

Khadi’s breathable, soft texture makes it perfect for all seasons. It’s a fabric that combines tradition with modern sensibility, offering a sustainable alternative to mass-produced textiles. Whether in the form of a simple shirt, a stylish scarf, or a traditional sari, khadi continues to embody India’s heritage of handcrafted elegance.
